SEO vs AEO vs GEO: What Each One Means for a Local Business
SEO, AEO and GEO are three names for getting your business found, each aimed at a different kind of search. SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking in Google's regular results. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being the direct answer to a question, like a featured snippet or a voice assistant's reply. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being mentioned and cited when AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews write an answer.
The good news for a local business owner: these aren't three separate projects with three separate budgets. They overlap heavily, and the same foundation powers all three. Here's how they differ and what actually matters.
SEO: ranking in search results
SEO is the original. The goal is to rank your pages for the searches your customers make, like "emergency plumber near me" or "family dentist in Mesa." It covers the technical health of your website, useful content, links from other sites and, for local businesses, your Google Business Profile and reviews. The result is a link to your site that someone clicks.
AEO: being the answer
Answer engine optimization grew out of featured snippets and voice search. Someone asks "how often should I service my furnace?" and Google or a voice assistant reads back a single answer. AEO means structuring your content so it's the easiest answer to pull out: a clear question as a heading, a direct one- or two-sentence answer right below it, then the detail. FAQ sections, how-to steps and plain language all help.
GEO: being cited by AI
The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues. They describe "generative engines" that gather information from several sources and summarize it with a large language model, and they found that certain content changes could boost a source's visibility in those AI answers by up to 40%. They also found the best approach varies by topic, so there's no single trick.
In practice, GEO for a small business means being known and described consistently across the web, so AI tools are confident enough to name you. AI assistants look beyond your own website: news mentions, review sites, directories, social profiles and other trusted sources all shape what they say.
SEO vs AEO vs GEO at a glance
- Where you show up: SEO in the list of search results; AEO in featured snippets and voice answers; GEO inside AI-written answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features.
- What success looks like: SEO is a click to your site; AEO is your answer being read or shown; GEO is your business being named or cited.
- What drives it: SEO relies on technical health, content, links and reviews. AEO relies on clear question-and-answer formatting. GEO relies on trusted mentions across the web and consistent facts about your business.
What Google says about AI search
Google's guidance for site owners is reassuring. Its documentation on AI features and your website says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in them. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must simply be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.
Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build an answer. That means a page that covers a topic thoroughly, answering the related questions too, has more chances to be pulled in. It's the same advice as Google's guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content.
What a local business should actually do
Because the three overlap, one plan covers all of them:
- Get the SEO basics right. A fast, mobile-friendly website, a page for each service, clean titles and structured data. Nothing else works without this.
- Answer real questions clearly. Put common customer questions on your service pages and in an FAQ, each with a short, direct answer first. That's AEO.
- Keep your facts consistent everywhere. The same business name, address, phone, services and hours on your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Earn mentions on trusted sites. Local news, industry associations, press releases and partner websites give AI tools independent confirmation of who you are. That's the heart of GEO.
- Build reviews steadily. Reviews are a trust signal for Google's local results and a source AI tools draw on when describing businesses.
- Track it. Check whether AI assistants mention you for the topics you care about, and whether that changes over time.
Beware of anyone selling "GEO" as magic
New acronyms attract new sales pitches. No one can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google's AI will recommend your business, just as no one can guarantee a #1 Google ranking. Be wary of anyone who promises it, or who sells AI visibility as something completely separate from good SEO and a solid reputation.
