How Much Does SEO Cost Per Month for a Small Business?

By ·

Most businesses pay between $500 and $5,000 a month for ongoing SEO, and local SEO for a single-location business usually sits toward the lower end of that range. In Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, local SEO averaged $1,557 a month, and the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000.

That's a wide range, and the price alone tells you very little. A $300 plan that does real work can beat a $3,000 plan that sends you a monthly PDF and nothing else. Here's what drives SEO pricing, what you should get at each level, and the warning signs that a deal is too good (or too vague) to be true.

How SEO is usually priced

Ahrefs found three common pricing models. Many providers use more than one:

  • Monthly retainer (78.2% of providers): a flat fee every month for ongoing work. This is the norm because SEO results build over time.
  • Per project: a one-time fee for an audit, a website migration or a batch of pages.
  • Hourly: common for consultants. The survey's average was $111 an hour, with $100 to $150 the most common range; for local SEO, $75 to $100 was most common.

Typical SEO costs per month

From the same survey:

  • Average SEO retainer, all types: $2,917 a month.
  • Agencies: $3,209 a month on average. Freelancers: $1,348.
  • Local SEO: $1,557 a month on average ($1,819 at agencies, about $1,150 for freelancers).
  • Most popular retainer: $501 to $1,000 a month, charged by about one in five providers.

Prices vary by country, too. Ahrefs notes that in the U.S. and Canada, most providers charge at least $1,001 a month. So if you're a local business in the U.S. being quoted $1,000 to $2,000 a month for a full-service local SEO program, that's normal, not a rip-off.

What changes the price

  • Competition. A personal injury lawyer in a big city needs far more work than a dog groomer in a small town.
  • Number of locations and service areas.
  • Your starting point. A slow, outdated website needs fixing before ongoing SEO can pay off.
  • Content. Blog posts and service pages are often the biggest line item. Writing that's actually useful takes time.
  • Links and mentions. Earning links from other sites (press, local organizations, directories) costs extra and is often what separates rankings in competitive markets.
  • Who does the work. Agencies cost more than freelancers, partly because you're paying for a team and account management.

What you should get for the money

Whatever you pay, a real SEO program for a local business should cover:

  1. Technical fixes: speed, mobile usability, page titles, descriptions, structured data and broken links.
  2. Google Business Profile management: correct categories, services, photos, posts and review replies.
  3. Content: pages for each service and useful posts that answer the questions your customers search.
  4. Reviews: a steady system for asking happy customers.
  5. Reporting you can understand: rankings, traffic, calls and leads, with a clear explanation of what was done.

Red flags when hiring an SEO

Google's own guide, Do you need an SEO?, is blunt: no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Be wary of:

  • Guaranteed rankings or "page one in 30 days" promises.
  • Secret methods they won't explain.
  • Long contracts before you've seen any work.
  • Reports full of numbers but no list of what they actually did.
  • Cheap link packages, which can get your site penalized.

Google suggests asking any SEO what results they expect and in what timeframe, how they measure success, and what experience they have in your industry and city.

How long until SEO pays off?

Quick fixes like a broken Google Business Profile or missing page titles can help within weeks. Ranking for competitive searches usually takes several months of steady work, which is why SEO is priced monthly. If a provider can't tell you what they'll do in month one, two and three, keep looking.

Is cheap SEO ever worth it?

Yes, if the low price comes from efficiency rather than doing less. Much of the routine work (technical checks, profile updates, review replies, reporting) can now be handled by software with a person reviewing it, which brings costs down without cutting corners. What you should never skimp on is honesty about what's being done.
