How to Get More Google Reviews Without Being Pushy

By · · Updated

Business owner on the phone with a happy customer

The way to get more Google reviews without being pushy is to ask every happy customer at the moment they're happiest, make it a one-tap link, and reply to the reviews you get. Never pay for reviews or offer anything in return. Google's rules and the FTC's both prohibit it. A steady habit of asking beats any one-time push.

Why reviews matter so much

Reviews show up right next to your business on Google Maps and Search, and they influence whether people call you or the next business. They also count toward how Google ranks local results. Google's guide to improving local ranking says review count and ratings factor into prominence. More recent, genuine reviews help on both fronts.

1. Ask at the right moment

Timing beats wording. Ask when the customer is happiest:

  • Right after a job is finished and they've said thanks
  • When a patient leaves a good appointment
  • After you've solved a problem quickly
  • When a client closes on a home or wins a case

A quick "Would you mind sharing that on Google? It really helps us" goes a long way when it follows a genuine compliment.

2. Make it one tap

Google lets you create a link or QR code that opens your review form directly. Its tips to get more reviews recommend exactly this. Put the link in a follow-up text, in your email signature and on your receipts, and print the QR code at your front desk.

3. Send a follow-up text

Most people mean to leave a review and then forget. A short text the same day, with the link, gets far more reviews than asking in person alone. Keep it personal: use their name and mention what you did for them.

4. Reply to every review

Google encourages owners to reply. Thank people for positive reviews, and keep it short and specific. For negative reviews, stay calm, acknowledge the concern, and invite them to contact you directly. Future customers read your replies as much as the reviews.

If you're in healthcare or law, be careful: never confirm someone is a patient or client, or mention details of their care or case, in a public reply.

What you can't do

  • Don't offer incentives. Google's review policy says offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews is prohibited.
  • Don't buy reviews or write fake ones. The FTC's rule on consumer reviews, 16 CFR Part 465, bans buying fake reviews and paying for reviews that express a particular sentiment, and allows civil penalties.
  • Don't only ask happy customers through a filter. Asking everyone, rather than screening out unhappy customers first, keeps you on the right side of the rules and builds trust.
  • Don't have staff review you. Reviews from employees or family without disclosure mislead customers.

Make it a habit

The businesses with the most reviews aren't pushier. They just ask consistently. Build the ask into your process, such as an automatic text after every completed job or appointment, so it happens every time without anyone having to remember.

Example messages you can use

Short, personal and specific works best. Adjust these to your own voice:

  • After a job: "Hi Sarah, thanks again for having us out today. If you have a minute, a quick Google review would mean a lot to our small team: [link]"
  • After an appointment: "Thanks for coming in today, Mike. We'd be grateful if you shared how your visit went: [link]"
  • After a milestone: "Congratulations again! If you're happy with how everything went, would you mind leaving us a review? [link]"

Send one reminder a few days later if they haven't left one, then let it go. One follow-up is helpful; more than that starts to feel pushy.

Common questions
