Society of Master Saddlers
If you’re looking for a saddle fitter in your area, chances are you’ve come across the term “SMS-qualified” or “SMS QSF”. (Or maybe not, in which case—keep looking!) “SMS-qualified” and “SMS QSF” both refer to a saddle fitter that has been certified by The Society of Master Saddlers UK.
What does it mean for a saddle fitter
to be “SMS-Qualified”?
The Society of Master Saddlers is a trade association based in the UK that oversees qualification and training for everyone in the saddlery trade, from manufacturers and retailers through individual craftspeople and saddle fitters. Currently, the SMS is the only organization to provide industry-wide standards of training and service for professional saddlers and saddle fitters.
SMS-Qualified saddle fitters must have at least 3 years’ experience in saddle fitting, and complete the Qualified Saddle Fitters’ course and assessment. To maintain certification, members must also attend a refresher course every two years.
How can I tell if my saddle fitter is SMS-qualified?
The SMS provides a directory of all qualified members. You’ll find Kate listed there as an Overseas Qualified Saddle Fitter!
The FEI recently profiled the SMS for their “Equestrian Snapshots” series—check out the video here!
